This weekend, when Carnival is celebrated in many towns in Spain, there will be spring weather in most of the country, with many hours of sunshine; Suspended dust with possible mud rains in the south of the peninsula, Ceuta and Melilla, and a marked contrast between night and day temperatures, which can be more than 20 degrees.
An isolated depression at high levels (DANA, in meteorological jargon) located in the vicinity of the Gulf of Cádiz and which will move northward will determine the weather not only this weekend, but a few more days.
“This time, the DANA is not going to be synonymous, far from it, with torrential rains, but its effects will be felt in another way. It will inject warm air and bring suspended dust from North Africa to the peninsula. For this reason, the highlights will be the high temperatures for the season, especially from Sunday, and the haze, which will spread to many areas of Spain, also from Sunday,” summed up Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the Agency State Meteorology (Aemet).
On the other hand, the rains will be scarce, weak and occasional, and will occur on Saturday, especially in points of western Andalusia and on Sunday in the extreme north of the peninsula. “In Andalusia they may be accompanied by mud due to the presence of suspended dust,” said Del Campo.
As for the temperatures, the environment will be spring like until next Tuesday, as the thermometers will mark progressively rising values ??and from Sunday they will be high for the time of year, especially in the central hours of the day, when the temperatures will be exceeded. 18 degrees in large areas of the country.
Even in points of the central zone and southern half, temperatures will reach or exceed 20 degrees, as will be the case on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, although in this area there will be a temporary drop in temperatures on Sunday to rise again on Monday.
“In the Guadalquivir valley, the city of Seville may be around 25 degrees maximum temperature. We are talking, therefore, of high values ??for the time, between 5 and 10 degrees higher than normal, which are temperatures more typical of the second fortnight of April or even the beginning of May,” said Del Campo.
At night, temperatures will also rise, especially from Sunday, when they will be somewhat higher than usual and frost will only be restricted to mountain areas. Thus, there will be a lot of thermal amplitude, that is, the difference between night and day temperatures, especially in the interior of the northern half and the central peninsular area.
The Aemet prediction, collected by Servimedia, indicates that the capitals with the greatest thermal amplitude this Saturday will be Teruel, with 22 degrees between dawn (-4) and day (18), as well as Ourense (2 and 22) and Guadalajara , Lleida, Vitoria and Zamora (-1 and 18).
The thermal contrast will be greater this Sunday in Teruel (1 degree at dawn and 20 during the day), Girona (3 and 21), Toledo (4 and 22), Albacete (2 and 19), Girona (3 and 21) and Badajoz and Ciudad Real (4 and 21).
On the other hand, the suspension dust will be noticeable this Friday in the south of Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla as it is driven by winds that will generate easterly storms in the Strait and the Andalusian Mediterranean coast. In those areas there will be a maritime storm with waves that on Saturday can reach up to three or four meters, just like this Friday, and a little less on Sunday.
“The suspension dust will give rise to haze, that is, it will give the sky a cloudy appearance, an ocher appearance, and it will cause a decrease in visibility,” Del Campo commented. It is already doing so this Friday, on Saturday it will continue in the south of the peninsula and on Sunday and Monday it will intensify in Ceuta and Melilla, and in the south of the peninsula, as well as extending to large areas of the rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, although with less intensity.
“The dust particles that make up the haze are very small. These particles come from the desert to our latitudes and remain in suspension precisely because of their small size. They are particles that, in many cases, do not reach 10 microns. So that we Let’s get an idea, they are smaller in diameter than a very fine human hair, so they are able to enter our airways and enter the bloodstream, which can pose a health risk. Suspended dust is a pollutant of natural origin, but a pollutant. Therefore, air quality worsens and it is advisable to take precautions, such as not doing strenuous exercise outdoors when the dust concentration is very high,” Del Campo explained.
This time, the DANA will not bring torrential rains. For this, there must be other factors, such as high atmospheric humidity. In this case, the isolated depression drives dry air, so rainfall will be scarce.
On Saturday it is possible that some weak, isolated and occasional showers will form in Andalusia and the south of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha, without ruling out that they may also occur in an even weaker way in the rest of the southern half of the peninsula and center points.
“These showers will also be, if they occur, accompanied by mud deposits by dragging the suspended dust to the surface,” added Del Campo.
On Sunday and Monday there could be some light rain on the banks of the Cantabrian Sea, without ruling it out at points in the western half. On Tuesday there will be a slight increase in instability law and it is possible that it rains in Galicia and western Castilla y León.
“As of Wednesday, it is possible that this situation of a temperate environment with dust and suspension will definitively subside with the arrival of a front, which would leave that day and perhaps also on Thursday rainfall in the north of the peninsula, more abundant in the Bay of Biscay and Pyrenees. These rains could spread to other parts of the territory during the following days, with snow in the mountains,” Del Campo advanced.
The temperatures will drop from next Wednesday, with which they will return to more normal values ??for the time of year during the second half of next week.
Regarding the Canary Islands, this weekend there will be cloudiness in the north of the most mountainous islands. Showers cannot be ruled out on Saturday, which in Tenerife and Gran Canaria could be locally more intense. Monday and Tuesday could be cloudy in the north of the higher relief islands, with the possibility of rain or drizzle there, and with more open skies in the rest of the archipelago.
It is also possible that on Sunday and Monday there will be haze in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The temperatures will be pleasant, between 17 or 18 degrees at dawn and from 9 to 10 pm in the central hours of the day both in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
