The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, announced this Friday the creation of a new United Nations advisory body on artificial intelligence, as well as the list of its members. Among them is the Spanish Carme Artigas Brugal, current Secretary of State for digitalization and AI in Spain.
With her thirty years of experience in the public and private sectors, the chemical engineer joins this select group of 38 experts from around the world who this Friday will hold their first meeting in order to put on the table the risks and opportunities that come with implementation of this technology.
Currently, Artigas is responsible for the design and implementation of the Spanish Digital Agenda, which includes the National AI Strategy, the Public Administration digitalization modernization plan and the cybersecurity plan, among others.
Furthermore, the renowned expert in big data and technological innovation must combine this new position with her responsibilities as head of the Data Office under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation to which she belongs, as well as representative of Spain in the OECD, in the D9, in the G20 and in the telecommunications working group of the European Commission.
Among the reasons that have led the UN Secretary General to call “for a global, multidisciplinary and multi-actor conversation” on the matter is the possible “malicious use of AI that could undermine trust in institutions, weaken social cohesion and threaten democracy itself,” according to Guterres himself at the press conference held this Thursday in New York.
This initiative, which brings together members of the public and private, academic and civil communities, will try to build a scientific consensus regarding AI that is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In turn, they will work on a medium and long-term roadmap that includes the necessary efforts, among other issues. In fact, they have brought forward the publication of a preliminary report to the end of 2023, and a series of final recommendations for the Future Summit to be held during the summer of 2024.
