The black cloud that has long been looming over the sector of the car is far from dissipating. The uncertainty over Ford -slope of a restructuring in Europe of its business, which may include up to the closure of any factory – has since spread to the whole sector in the Valencian Community, whose companies have a combined turnover higher than 12,400 million euros. And in this scenario of doom and gloom, foreign sales of cars have plummeted in the first half of the year.
So it is in the latest report of Foreign Trade made by the Secretary of State for Trade of the Ministry of Industry, corresponding to the month of August. In the case of the Valencian Community, the growth of exports was 4.1% between January and August of this year was clouded by the fall in sales in the automotive sector up to 10%. It is one of the largest declines with respect to 2017 in the chapter on exports, to the point that the report itself highlights that “the main contributions to negative [in exports in the valencian] came from the automotive sector (contribution of -2,6 points)”.
In total, exports of valencia reached a value of 20.414 million euros. For the automotive sector, which represents 22.4% of the total, the amount rose to 4.579 million. Of these, 3.865 million was for cars and motorbikes, whose exports fell 10.3% in 2018 compared to the period of January-August of 2017. Exports of components of the car were worth 713 million, with a decrease in this case of 8.4%.
imports in this sector were also reduced, albeit more mild (2.6% less) and by value of 3.291 million. In total, the trade balance was positive (1,288 million euros) for the automotive sector.
In the set of imports (18.338 million euros between January and August of 2018), increased by 5.4%, representing a 3.8 percentage points less than in the same period last year). In this way, the trade balance reached a surplus of 2.076,5 million euros in the same period of 2017 was 2.208,8 million euros).
The exports of the Valencian Community, directed to the European Union in January-August of 2018 (representing a 63% of the total) advanced 3.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. In the case of sales to the euro area (48,3% of the total), increased by 6.5%, while those for the rest of the European Union (14.7% of the total), decreased by 4.1%.
By countries, highlights the cumulative increase through August of the sales to France (13%), Portugal (9,2%), Italy (2,2%) and Germany (2%), while decreased the targeted to the Uk (-9,5%).
