The European Union (EU) plans to impose new sanctions on Russia before the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Thursday on a visit to kyiv.
“Together with our G-7 partners, we will introduce an additional cap on the prices of Russian oil products, and by February 24, exactly one year after the start of the invasion, we want to have the 10th package of sanctions in place.” , declared Von der Leyen, during a press conference with the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky.
According to Von der Leyen, the existing sanctions “erode the economy” of Russia, estimating that the imposition of a maximum price of Russian oil cost Moscow “about 160 million euros a day”.
Von der Leyen welcomed recent anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine on Thursday, a key issue for the war-torn country and its future EU membership.
“It reassures me to see that anti-corruption agencies are alert and quickly detect cases of corruption,” he declared alongside the Ukrainian president, whose “rapid reaction at the political level” he praised for this fight to have “tangible results.”
