NEW YORK , Audra McDonald will be moving from hosting the Tony Awards to a new stage role.

Six-time Tony-winner Adrienne Kennedy will be back on Broadway as the lead in “Ohio State Murders”, directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon. The creative team and dates will be announced shortly.

The play is a lecture that Suzanne Alexander gives to the audience. She is a well-known African American writer and has been invited to speak at Ohio State University about her work. The lecture Alexander gives turns into a murder mystery, which unfolds in the late-night rehearsals deep within the stacks of Ohio State University’s library.

Kennedy, who is 90 years old, will be making her Broadway debut in this production.

“Ohio State Murders,” originally commissioned by Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Cleveland, received its world premiere there in 1992, staring Ruby Dee. This was one year after a workshop production at Yale Repertory Theatre.

In 2014, McDonald’s won a Tony for her role as Billie Holiday in “Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill.”
