Cardi B did not stay to accept the honor at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, but Megan Thee Stallion ran to grab it, forgetting to thank Cardi in her speech.
The “Savage” rapper was able to make up the difference when she won best female artist in hip-hop a few seconds later.
Megan Thee Stallion was the big winner with four trophies. I think highly of all the women nominated for this category.
The BET Awards celebrated female artists and featured a seductive performance from Lil Nas X, Queen Latifah and Gay Pride. She thanked her partner and son when she accepted Lifetime Achievement Award.
She rattled off thank you’s and she ended by saying: “Ebony my love, Rebel my love,” The 51-year old concluded with “Peace!” Happy pride!
Queen Latifah was recognized for her distinguished career as a Grammy-winning singer, an Emmy-winning producer and actor, as well as her stellar record of achievements in television production. Rapsody and Monie love opened the tribute by performing “Ladies First.” Lil Kim and MC Lyte then rapped the classic “U.N.I.T.Y.”
With his No. The No. 1 hit, “Montero” (Call me by Your Name), was a hit that saw Lil Nas X and a male background dancer lock lips. The crowd cheered loudly. Some members of the audience leapt out of their chairs in praise.
His stage was set in Ancient Egypt much like Michael Jackson’s song “Remember the Time”, which Lil Nas X paid homage to during the performance with a skillful dance break.
Mothers were also honored during the three-hour show. Queen Latifah attended with her father; Megan Thee Stallion recalled her mother, who passed away in 2019, during her speech.
She said that her mom was diagnosed with breast carcinoma two years ago. We didn’t expect any of this to happen, but God has been so faithful and my mom is now in remission. This is my prize. This is my gift. Being with her means more to me than any other thing. She was there for me throughout my entire life.
As Taraji P. Henson, actor and host, put it at the top of the show, the ceremony was dedicated “the year of Black woman.” Rep. Maxine waters spoke her trademark phrase, “reclaiming my Time” before Sullivan took to the stage with Ari Lennox for a sultry and top-notch performance. Andra Day won the best actress award. Darnella Frazier, a teenager who recorded George Floyd being pinned down by a police officer, was awarded the Shine a Light Award.
Frazier was unable to attend the awards ceremony, but she received the honor weeks after being awarded a special Pulitzer Prizes citation for her video which helped to create a worldwide movement against racial injustice.
H.E.R. won best female R&B/pop singer. She also wow the crowd with her performance. Grammy winner H.E.R. told the crowd it was important to “recognize each other” and “celebrate each other.”
She added, “If we don’t, who will?”
Lil Baby, a rapper, won the best male hip-hop album and teamed up with Kirk Franklin, a gospel artist, to open the show. Zendaya, Queen Latifah and DJ Khaled were all bouncing in their seats during this performance.
Swizz Beatz curated this tribute to DMX who died in April at the age of 50. Busta Rhymes and Method Man performed, as well as Michael K. Williams, The Lox, Griselda, and The Lox.
Other Sunday winners included Chris Brown who won best male R&B/pop singer; Giveon was named best new artist; while Silk Sonic, the duo of Bruno Mars, Anderson.Paak, and Silk Sonic, took home the best group award. Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2008, was awarded the best actor award.
