In celebration of Black History Month, the Community Awareness Series of Jersey City will host a jazz music performance with special appearance by legendary percussionist Candido, who will turn 96 in April.
The performance, in conjunction with the Jazz Foundation of America, is at 7 p.m. at the Jersey City library’s Miller branch, 489 Bergen Ave.
The event will also feature T.K. Blue, aka Talib Kibwe, and the Jazz Foundation All Stars.
Candido, a Cuban-born conga and bongo percussionist, is the most recorded conga drummer in the history of jazz. He is well known for his contributions to the development of mambo and Afro-Cuban jazz and has recorded and performed with seemingly everybody in the field.
His collaborators include luminaries such as Billy Taylor, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Slide Hampton, Charles Mingus, Wes Montgomery, Gerry Mulligan, Charlie “Bird” Parker, Sonny Rollins and Clark Terry, to name a few.
Blue, a heralded saxophonist and composer, has a rich musical history and has performed all over the world with internationally acclaimed artists such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Randy Weston, Chico Hamilton, Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Scott and Daoud-David Williams, the founder of The Community Awareness Series.
“These artists are all dynamic international musicians that will provide an enriching experience for the community,” said Williams, who noted that the Community Awareness Series is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. “We are very proud and happy to set the stage for this concert.”
The performance marks the first collaboration between The Community Awareness Series and The Jazz Foundation of America. The foundation has been keeping jazz, blues, R&B and soul alive for the past 27 years.
