Shortly after midnight, residents alerted the fire brigade in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Velbert: a warehouse with buses and other vehicles caught fire. It took several hours for firefighters to extinguish the flames.
A major fire involving several vehicles in a bus depot in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Velbert caused damage of around 1.3 million euros. Eight buses, a car and a truck caught fire on private property during the night, the Velbert fire department said in the morning.
According to the fire department, the first emergency calls were received shortly after midnight. When emergency services arrived, six buses were already on fire. The fire brigade set up steel pipes to prevent the fire from spreading to other vehicles.
Diesel had escaped from the destroyed buses and had to be vacuumed off. A power line was also damaged. After about half an hour, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control. However, it still took a while before it could be completely erased. It is not yet known how the fire started. Nobody got hurt. 60 rescuers were deployed.
