Due to Corona, you can submit your tax return well into the autumn. After that, everything can happen very quickly and in some federal states it takes almost a month for the decision to be made. While the tax offices in the capital step on the gas, it takes much longer in the surrounding Brandenburg.

According to a report, most tax offices processed tax returns last year faster than the year before, despite the corona pandemic. The Berlin authorities were particularly quick, reports the portal t-online.de, citing a current study by the Taxpayers’ Association (BdSt). On average, 33 days passed between the submission of the tax return and the notification in the capital – four days less than in the previous year. In Brandenburg, on the other hand, the processing time has increased by six days and the tax assessment came after 48 days on average. This puts Brandenburg in last place in a nationwide comparison.

According to the report, Hamburg (35 days) took second place in the ranking, followed by Saarland (38) and Rhineland-Palatinate (39). The taxpayers’ association is critical of the large differences in processing times. “It must not depend on where you live when citizens and companies receive their tax assessment and possibly even get their money back,” quoted t-online.de the head of the BdSt’s tax department, Daniela Karbe-Gessler.

According to the information, the evaluation relates to the assessment year 2020, i.e. to the tax returns that were processed by the tax offices by the end of 2021. According to the taxpayers’ association, this is based on average values ??from all tax returns processed by the tax authorities of the individual federal states. North Rhine-Westphalia has not reported any specific figures.
