Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) has announced that it will be temporarily closing its doors starting from December in order to address its financial challenges and ensure its long-term sustainability. The CCA, located on Sauchiehall Street, has been facing increasing financial difficulties in recent months, partially due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and fires at the nearby Glasgow School of Art.
In a statement shared on social media, the CCA team explained that the closure will last until March 2025. During this time, they will be focusing on securing the centre’s stability and planning for the future. Efforts are also being made to find ways to continue community initiatives during the closure period, with the possibility of keeping the in-house bar open for patrons.
Despite the temporary closure, the CCA reassured the public that they will continue to operate as usual until December. The aim is to reopen in the spring of 2025 with renewed plans that will carry the centre forward for years to come.
Originally established as the Third Eye Centre, the CCA had previously faced closure in 2018 following a fire at the Glasgow School of Art, which affected several businesses renting space within the building. Subsequently, the centre’s cafe bar was permanently closed after its tenants decided to move out.
The decision to temporarily close the CCA is a strategic move to address financial uncertainties and ensure the long-term stability of the centre. By taking this step, the CCA hopes to emerge stronger and more resilient, ready to continue serving the community with its cultural offerings and initiatives.
During the closure period, the CCA will be engaging in strategic planning and exploring new opportunities to enhance its operations and offerings. The support of the community will be crucial in helping the CCA navigate these challenging times and emerge successfully on the other side.
As Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts embarks on this temporary closure for renovations, the focus remains on securing its future and continuing to be a vibrant hub for culture and creativity in the city. The CCA team is committed to overcoming the current financial challenges and looks forward to welcoming visitors back in the spring of 2025 with an even stronger and more sustainable foundation.
