RTL reporter Günter Wallraff is a legend as an investigative journalist. Now the 80-year-old is receiving a special honor. “Medium Magazin” honors his life’s work with an honorary award. Gregor Peter Schmitz from “Stern” took first place in the category “National Editor-in-Chief”.
RTL investigative reporter Günter Wallraff has received the honorary award from “Medium Magazin” for his life’s work. “With his legendary undercover operations, Günter Wallraff became a role model for numerous journalists and shaped his own genre. For some he is a courageous fighter for justice, for others an icon of investigative journalism,” said the jury in its statement.
The magazine titled the 80-year-old Wallraff in the published portrait as the “indomitable”, who still uncovers grievances with his “Team Wallraff” on RTL – such as the catastrophic hygienic conditions at the fast-food chain Burger King. “A journalistic beacon with enduring radiance,” is how the jury sums up Wallraff’s importance.
“Stern” Editor-in-Chief Gregor Peter Schmitz was honored as the best in the category “National Editor-in-Chief”. The jury’s reasoning said: “It’s brilliant how he got ‘Stern’ back on the journalistic radar in just a few months: thanks to Schmitz, the magazine is more relevant, provocative and political again. In addition, he also mastered several explosive challenges as a manager sovereign.”
