Chicago contestants quickly captured the spotlight on Thursday’s episode of "MasterChef Junior" as the young chefs vied to set themselves apart from their competition.
River North resident Avani Shah and Hyde Parker Evan Robinson kicked off the episode by discussing their passion for cooking and excitement for the Fox competition.
The 20 contestants, all between the ages of 8 and 13 years old, were tasked with making a rice dish in an hour for an advantage in the main dish challenge. Georgia student Afnan Ahmad won the first round and picked three competitors, including Avani, to sit out the second round with him.
In the second round, the remaining 16 contestants were required to replicate judge Gordon Ramsay’s pan roasted sea bass dish in one hour.
The judges’ critiques of the dishes made by Evan and Edgebrook student Charlie Hans were not shown, but they advanced to the Kaçak Bahis next round with Avani. Two Texas contestants were sent home on Thursday’s episode.

Eighteen contestants remain on Season 5 of "MasterChef Junior," which airs 7 p.m. Thursdays. The winners gets $100,000.
