At the beginning of September, a German on Crete sets out on a hike to the Psiloritis Mountains. The 53-year-old later contacted his family and said he had lost his bearings. Rescuers have now discovered the man’s body.

A German vacationer who has been missing in Crete for more than two weeks has been found dead. A team of German dog handlers with corpse detection dogs found the man on Wednesday, according to the rescue workers. According to Greek media reports, the 53-year-old had visited the Kamares Cave in rough mountainous terrain at an altitude of around 1,500 meters and had crashed on the way back for reasons that have not yet been explained.

Greek rescue workers combed the region in vain; the place could not be seen, the German rescue workers said. Local mountain rescuers and the fire brigade were deployed during the rescue to reach the casualty in the difficult alpine terrain. An autopsy is now to be carried out and the cause of the accident investigated.

As the newspaper “Neue Presse” reports, the missing person telephoned his family in Germany around midday on September 2 that he was lost. When it got dark, he decided to take a break and look for the right way the next morning. On September 3rd at 4.40 a.m. there was the last sign of life, the newspaper writes. The 53-year-old is said to have told a friend that he would now be on his way. Previously, he had sent the acquaintance a screenshot of Google Maps with the message that he now knew how to proceed.

The Kamares Cave is located on the southern slope of the Psiloritis Mountains. The ascent is long and arduous. The cave is known for numerous pottery finds from the Bronze Age.
