15,000 kilometres, 21 cities and a spectacular stand with a QR to find out how the Spanish believe public television should be. The controversial campaign The Great Consultation ends this Wednesday, an initiative of the former president of RTVE José Manuel Pérez Tornero, which cost 345,412 euros, according to himself, he revealed in parliamentary headquarters and which will serve to create a White Paper that will serve as the basis for a new mandate where the public service missions that RTVE must provide in the coming years are established.
The great consultation asked 132,357 people between August 27, 2021 and September 14, 2022 which public radio and television they want to have, reports Efe. According to the conclusions that have been presented this Wednesday with a large event with round tables in Prado del Rey, the majority of Spaniards believe that the different RTVE channels (radio, television and internet) should offer news, documentaries, cultural, educational and Spanish and European cinema, compared to a ‘residual’ percentage that would prefer talk shows about celebrities and gossip shows to be broadcast.
RTVE’s Director of Communications, María Eizaguirre, who was very present throughout the entire survey, and Francesc López, responsible for the data for this initiative, were in charge of presenting the conclusions, which highlight that practically all of those surveyed believes that news (122,329 people), documentaries (116,013), cultural (114,375), educational (107,032) and Spanish and European cinema (102,133) are the contents that should prevail.
In contrast, only 9,437 people think that talk shows about celebrities should lead the programming, 10,548 gossip programs and 12,733 reality shows.
Almost three quarters of those surveyed defend that the fight against disinformation is an essential function of RTVE, and more than 90% that objectivity and information quality are the values ??that must always be included in information content. More than 82% think that it should reflect pluralism and diversity of opinions, 65% the interpretation, analysis and contextualization, and only 15% the taking of specific positions on the issues that are addressed and 10% the commitment with specific ideologies.
On the importance that should be given in their programming to the defense of equality between women and men, more than 77% believe that “a lot or enough” compared to 9.48% who say “little or not at all”. More than 73% defend that RTVE incorporates the defense of women’s rights and equality between men and women across all programming.
And regarding violence against women, 39.13% think that it should be addressed more broadly and 29.71% that it should give a more contextual and pedagogical treatment and not just remain in the news.
Almost 20% think that RTVE offers adequate information, and only 7.2% that the information makes women appear as victims and 4.3% that there is a lack of information on resilient women who have survived violence.
Regarding sports, 61.4% believe that RTVE should dedicate more broadcasts to women’s sports competitions, and also more than a third that more minority sports should be included in the channels’ regular programming.
61% also defend that RTVE attaches great importance to environmental challenges.
