The party song “Layla” has been at the top of the German music charts for almost three weeks. However, the song may not be played at the Kiliani folk festival in Würzburg. The controversial Donaulied is also taboo at the event.

Würzburg has banned the playing of the Ballermann hit “Layla” at the Kiliani folk festival in the city. “It will be ensured that the song will no longer be played in the future,” the “Mainpost” quoted a spokesman for the city as saying. The background is the lyrics, which critics perceive as sexist.

“Layla” by DJ Robin

The city of Würzburg had already concluded an agreement with the folk festival operators that the controversial “Donaulied” may no longer be played. The song is about a man who rapes a scantily clad girl sleeping by the river. When she then accuses him of having made her pregnant, he only replies: “You stupid bitch, what do you think of me? I always carry a rubber band with me”.

The agreement between the city of Würzburg and the operators includes all lyrics that have racist or sexist content, the newspaper reports. Now “Layla” may no longer be played at the festival. The Junge Union Hessen, which played “Layla” at the end of June at its state conference, recently caused discussions. The state chairwoman of the Hessian Jusos, Sophie Frühwald, then accused the youth association of “blatant sexism”.
