Two leading British theatre actors are currently working on a Stranger Things stage play. Netflix has confirmed that a spin-off TV show will also be produced.
Netflix announced that the play will be “set in the world and mythologyof Stranger Things” and directed by Stephen Daldry and produced by Sonia Friedman.
The Duffer brothers, Stranger Things creators, will oversee it as one of many new projects.
The screen spinoff will be “based upon an original idea” by the pair.
Netflix did not provide any details but Ross Duffer told Happy Sad Confused podcast recently that the series would be “1,000% different” than the current one.
Matt Duffer said: “I have heard rumors that Eleven will be spun-off, that Steve and Dustin will be spin-offs, or that it is another number.
“It’s not interesting to us because we feel like we’ve done everything.” It’s not clear how many hours we’ve spent exploring all that. It’s quite different.
The stage play may also adapt existing series, but it is unknown if that will be the case. It is not known if it will launch in the UK, as it is being directed by a British couple.
Friedman has been the stage director of many major Broadway and West End shows, including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Jerusalem, as well as The Inheritance and Jerusalem.
Daldry, who was best known for his work as a director of Billy Elliott, received a number of theatre awards for The Iheritance, his final major play. It opened in London in 2018.
The Netflix announcement on Wednesday came just days after Stranger Things’ final episode was released. It is the first English-language season to be watched on Netflix for more than one million hours.
The company’s success led to the announcement of a series of new projects by the Duffers.
Netflix revealed that the brothers had founded their own production company called Upside Down Pictures, named after Stranger Things’ nightmarish realm.
The company will also produce a series that is based on the Japanese manga and anime hit Death Note. This film was made into a Netflix movie in 2017. It also features an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1984 fantasy novel The Talisman by Peter Straub.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief executive officer and chief content officers, stated that Matt and Ross are “an exceptionally unique talent with an unmistakable vision.”
“They’re all about the details. It’s no accident Stranger Things has penetrated the zeitgeist and become the iconic pop culture phenomenon that it is today.”
