The break-up of a platform of oil exploitation off the coast of Newfoundland (Canada) that has caused the spill of 250,000 litres of oil, warned this Tuesday, the canadian authorities, who claimed that it is impossible to clean up the pollution.
The spill occurred last Friday when the platform SeaRose of the company Husky Energy is preparing to restart its production to about 350 kilometres of the coast of the canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the Atlantic.
Husky reviewed with an underwater vehicle operated remotely by the pipes and distribution lines of SeaRose and confirmed that the spill had stopped, but that the amount of crude pouring into the sea was about 250,000 litres, the largest accident of this kind in the history of the canadian province.
The council regulator of the oil sector in Newfoundland and Labrador C-NLOPB, said in a statement that until now have been recovered 14 sea birds covered in oil are being treated in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Today, the ceo of C-NLOPB, Scott Tessier, told media in canada have not been discovered spots of oil floating on the surface of the Atlantic, which considers that the oil has sunk and can’t be cleaned.
Husky Energy said today in a statement that the production from SeaRose continues paralyzed and that it is investigating the causes of the spill.
The company has been criticised for attempting to resume production when SeaRose was still affected by a huge storm that hit the region last November 15, and that was catalogued by meteorologists canadians as the largest in the world with waves up to 9 meters of height.
The environmental organization Sierra Club Canada reported that the spill and the inability of Husky cleaning up the oil is a reminder that the canadian regulations are not to the height.
Sierra Club Canada also recalled that SeaRose almost colliding with an iceberg in the past year and that despite the danger, the company have not disconnected the platform that in those time stored 340.000 barrels of oil.
