BERLIN — Amazon has announced that it will reduce plastic packaging in Germany after receiving complaints from customers that the retailer contributes to the growth of mountains of waste.
Monday’s announcement by the company stated that all single-use plastic packaging will be replaced by paper-based bags and cardboard boxes at its German logistics center by the end of this year.
Third-party sellers may make exceptions if they provide products that are able to be relabeled for delivery. The company also stated that couriers will need to leave the products outdoors during rain.
German environmental groups have long called on Amazon to be the leader in reducing waste.
