Filmmaker Sophie Fillières died at the age of 58, several actors announced Monday, July 31, as well as the UniFrance association, responsible for exporting French cinema and audiovisual. The director with a singular universe had shot in particular Aïe (2000), Gentille (2005), Un chat un chat (2009) and La Belle et la Belle (2018). His short film Girls and Dogs (1992) received the Jean-Vigo Prize. She had also worked as a screenwriter with Xavier Beauvois, Benoît Jacquot and even Noémie Lvovsky. Sophie Fillières was also in the cast of Anatomy of a fall, by Justine Triet, which received the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
Sophie Fillières had chosen the path of comedy as soon as she left the Fémis in 1990. “It’s the best way to evacuate the psychology of the characters! Comedy allows you to venture into dangerous terrain without having to justify it, ”the director with always chiseled dialogues told Le Monde in 2005.
“It’s an immense sensitivity and a great talent that have died out,” reacted comedian Fabrice Luchini on Instagram. “Thank you Sophie for your unique and precious talent, thank you for taking me into your wacky and moving world”, Emmanuelle Devos posted on the same network, accompanying her message with a reproduction of the poster d’Arrête ou je continue (2014), a romantic comedy-drama by Sophie Fillières whose actress shares the cast with Mathieu Amalric. Sandrine Kiberlain, who had acted in the short film Girls and Dogs and then in La Belle et la Belle, said she was “devastated”.
