When we started this playlist, we had no idea how many songs were written about ice cream. Here is our selection, not exhaustive, but absolutely delicious!
It’s one of Tom Waits’ first songs, the ones the Californian sang in his very beginnings at the Troubadour, in Los Angeles, in 1969. In his voice, then more nasal than serious (we feel the veneration for Bob Dylan), he swings his “Ice Cream Man” and his “strawberry surprise sundae” or “cherry popsicle” through the streets. In short, do not miss the passage of the ice cream man!
The English group Metronomy has always known how to sing in the summer. After the cult albums The English Riviera or Summer 08, “Salted Caramel Ice Cream”, with its hopping old school synths that clack like strings and its sweet lyrics, is a spicy and heady neo-1980 electro pop summer gem. It was written by frontman Joseph Mount right after his collaboration with Robyn (whose Honey he produced), and you can still hear the singer’s dance imprint…
Extract from the album Ti Amo, which rocked our summer 2017 as it smelled of the beach, Italy and love, “Fior Di Latte” made us melt like Italian ice cream in a Fiat in full sun . Phoenix, the quartet of Versailles musicians who are a hit abroad, delights us with this unctuous title, a bittersweet scent that leaves a taste of regret on the tongue.
The daughter of Julien Clerc and Virginie Coupérie-Eiffel, 35-year-old singer (like dad), offers us this refrain from the islands or Brazil: “Say / that you won’t spend the summer, say / you won’t be able to taste the ice cream anymore vanilla / without crying, say…” Tropical lightness sometimes hides painful loves.
Attention, young and sensitive souls abstain! Kalika and Yelle’s ice cubes are downright hot. With her Eurodance synths, club beats and provocative lyrics, Kalika (another name for the Hindu goddess of preservation, transformation and destruction Kali) sings of desire, body, sensuality, sex, with humor and causticity. At 23, the former participant in Nouvelle Star signs this very hot duet with Yelle, another woman with sharp looks who is not afraid to have fun with gender codes and to eroticize the masculine.
