The mayor of Toulouse issued an order on Wednesday August 16 banning a show by comedian Dieudonné, who has been convicted several times of racial slur, incitement to hatred and apology for terrorism, the town hall communicated.
Dieudonné “is someone who has had a repeated provocative anti-republican position, so I wanted to make it clear that his coming to Toulouse was not desired and neither was his show”, declared the mayor, Jean-Luc Moudenc, to the ‘France Media Agency. “By his words, or dressed in the form of a spectacle, he works to divide society and offends everything that makes a Republic,” added the chosen one.
Scheduled for August 17 at 8 p.m., in an unspecified place, the show of the comedian who wears an electronic bracelet has already been banned in other cities, including Montpellier and Paris.
Jean-Luc Moudenc insisted on the “provocative” and “unhealthy effect” of not announcing the location of the performance, which according to the site Dieudosphere.com is communicated by SMS or email after purchasing tickets.
“The fact of not announcing the location hampers the public authorities to assess the risk of disturbances to public order”, specified the mayor who, in a press release, called “for regulatory changes to ensure the public order of shows and performances in question”.
Since 2002, Dieudonné has been the subject of numerous legal proceedings. He was sentenced in September 2020 to a fine of 10,000 euros for racist remarks made in June 2017 during his show “Bal des quenelles”.
