Ray Stevenson, the Irish actor who played the villain of “RRR,” an Asgardian warrior in the “Thor” movies and a member of the 13th Legion in the HBO series “Rome,” has died. He was 58 years old.
Stevenson’s representatives told The Associated Press that the actor passed away on Sunday, but did not provide further details.
Stevenson was born in Lisburn in 1964. After attending the Bristol Old Vic drama school and working for years in British television, he made his feature film debut in Paul Greengrass’s 1998 film Strange Request. In 2004, he appeared in King Arthur , by Antoine Fuqua, as Knight of the Round Table, and several years later he starred in the Marvel adaptation Punisher: War Zone.
Aside from the first three “Thor” films, in which he played Volstagg, one of Thor’s warrior friends, his other notable film roles include the Divergent trilogy, G.I. Joe: Revenge and Transporter Legacy.
On the small screen, he was Titus Pullo in the series Roma, the role that really launched his career in the United States at age 44. He was also Blackbeard in the Starz series Black Sails and Commander Jack Swinburne in the German television series Das Boot.
Stevenson also appeared in “Star Wars Rebels” and “The Clone Wars,” as Gar Saxon, and in the Star Wars action series “Ahsoka.” (not yet issued).
In an interview with Backstage in 2020, Stevenson said his acting idols were “on the likes of Lee Marvin or Gene Hackman.”
“They never had a bad performance, and they were brave and fearless,” Stevenson said. “They were never the attractive young lead; they were men I could relate to.”
