Gustavo Dudamel announced this Thursday his resignation as musical director of the Paris Opera at the end of the current 2022/23 season to “be able to spend more time with my family.”

“It is with a heavy heart, and after deep reflection, that I announce my resignation from the position of Music Director of the Paris Opera in order to spend more time with my family,” Dudamel said in a statement.

The Venezuelan conductor had signed with the Paris Opera in 2021 for a period of 6 years.

In 2026 he will leave the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra to join the New York Philharmonic.

“It has been a privilege to share such beautiful moments” with the artists of the institution during the last two seasons, said the Venezuelan conductor in a statement from the Parisian Opera.

“I have no other projects than to be with mine. I am deeply grateful to them for their support in my goal of growing and improving myself,” he added.

Dudamel, considered the most internationally influential Spanish-speaking conductor of modern times, is married to the Spanish actress María Valverde.
