The Ghosts in the Gardens sculpture event has returned to the city of York, featuring over 40 wire mesh figures scattered throughout the city center. Each sculpture represents a person from York’s rich history, from infamous highwayman Dick Turpin to local legends like the Museum Gardens bear and the University of York’s Long Boi duck.

Organised by York BID, the event has expanded since its debut in 2021, now including new characters like Mary Ann Fisher, a female stonemason from the 19th Century. The trail covers popular locations such as Museum Gardens, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, and The Shambles, as well as new spots like the city walls, St Olave’s Church, and the railway station.

After the trail concludes on 5th November, all 45 sculptures will be relocated to Museum Gardens for a special four-night ticketed event called Ghosts After Dark. This event will feature evening illuminations and storytelling from 7th to 10th November, offering a unique experience for visitors of all ages.

Carl Alsop, operations manager at York BID, highlighted the event as a great value experience for families, especially during the colder winter months. By supporting local businesses and providing affordable entertainment, Ghosts in the Gardens aims to engage both residents and tourists in the city’s history and culture.

As the event continues to grow in popularity, York BID remains dedicated to showcasing the city’s heritage in creative and engaging ways. The combination of art, history, and storytelling makes Ghosts in the Gardens a must-see attraction for anyone visiting York this season. Take a stroll through the city center and immerse yourself in the ghostly tales of York’s past, brought to life through these captivating sculptures.
