The legendary fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, known for her daring and punk-inspired designs, will have her personal wardrobe items auctioned off this month. Over 200 items, including clothing, shoes, jewelry, and iconic looks spanning four decades of her life, will be available for auction in London on June 25, with an online sale running from June 14 to 28.
Westwood’s wardrobe, curated by her husband and the creative director of her brand, Andreas Kronthaler, will be on display for the public to view at Christie’s auction house in London from Friday until June 24. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to various organizations that align with causes Westwood supported, such as The Vivienne Foundation, Amnesty International, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), and Greenpeace.
Described as a true style icon, Westwood’s unique blend of intellectual and political ideas influenced her innovative fashion designs, making her one of the few original creators in the industry. The auction includes standout pieces like her “Propaganda” look from the 2005-2006 Autumn collection, which pays homage to her punk roots and Aldous Huxley’s essay on propaganda in society.
Among the items up for auction is a navy blue ensemble from Westwood’s “Witches” collection dating back to Autumn/Winter 1983-84, inspired by witchcraft and artist Keith Haring’s magical symbols. This piece is expected to fetch up to £6,000 ($7,600) at the auction. Adrian Hume Sayer, head of the sale and director of Private & Iconic Collections at Christie’s, emphasized Westwood’s blend of activism, art, and style in each piece she created.
The auction presents a unique opportunity for both fans and fashion enthusiasts to delve into the public and private world of the legendary Dame Vivienne Westwood. By participating in the auction, attendees not only celebrate Westwood’s iconic legacy but also contribute to the causes she passionately supported throughout her life. The event serves as a fitting tribute to a designer who left an indelible mark on the fashion industry with her bold and thought-provoking creations.
