The Navy veteran accused of yelling “get out of my country” before opening fire on three men in a Kansas bar last week made his first court appearance Monday via closed-circuit television from a county jail.
Adam Purinton is charged with first-degree murder and two-counts of attempted first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Indian man Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, last Wednesday.
He also wounded Alok Madasani, 32, and Ian Grillot, 24, as they jumped to the victim’s aid, prosecutors said.
The incident is being investigated by the FBI as a possible hate crime, given the alleged derogatory statements and the fact that Srinivas and Madasani are both from India.
An Olathe County judge assigned Purinton a public defender, reported the Kansas City Star newspaper.
Purinton, who was arrested after confessing to an Applebees bartender the same evening as asking her to hide him, is currently held on $2 million bond.
He has yet to enter a plea.
Purinton is scheduled to return to court March 9.
