Federal authorities are set to announce racketeering charges against seven Baltimore Police officers, with accusations including robberies, filing false affidavits, and making fraudulent overtime claims.
Another officer is also charged in a separate drug distribution indictment.
The announcement of the charges is set for 11:15 a.m. at the United States Attorney’s Office.
Slated to attend are Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein, the special agent in charge of the Baltimore FBI field office Gordon B. Johnson, the special agent in charge of the Baltimore Drug Enforcement Administration Office Don A. Hibbert, and Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.
The time frame for the allegations was not immediately known. Since 2015, the Baltimore Police Department has been under a review by the Department of Justice regarding widespread civil rights violations. A consent decree between the federal government and city was reached in January, and is before a federal judge.
In a historic agreement, the city of Baltimore and the U.S. Department of Justice signed a consent decree Thursday that will commit the city to sweeping police reforms aimed at restoring community trust in city cops, and ensuring that they conduct everyday police work within the bounds of the Constitution.
