CLEVELAND, Ohio – Spots still remain on Hoppin’ Frog Brewery’s rare-beer club, but owner Fred Karm said he doesn’t expect openings to last much much longer.

The club, which launched Saturday, had a “very good” response, Karm said.

Karm would not say how many spots are in the club, just that he expects it to “sell out soon.”

“We sold a lot that day, but we still have some left,” he said. “I’m going to guess it will last at least one more week.”

Karm said he has been a member of Michael Jackson’s rare-beer beer club for more than a decade, and that launching one for his own brewery made perfect sense, especially since the brewery just received international recognition from ratebeer.com. Jackson was a writer considered a foremost expert on beer. He died in 2007.

About the club

The club allows Karm to make creative beers that often are more expensive to make, using creative ingredients like maple syrup or saffron, for example. So the question becomes “how can I do that and cut out the middleman and be able to sell it?” he said.

Club members will receive the limited-edition ales at special pricing, a third off retail. Members then have 60 days to pick up bottle. The initial sign-up includes eight Hoppin’ Frog brews. Membership is $200.
