OTTAWA—She’s an alien pretending to be human. She’s a substitute teacher on drugs. Nope, she’s Kellie Leitch, a controversial Conservative leadership candidate who set the Internet afire with chatter, larks and memes after she released an eight-minute campaign video Monday.
Ostensibly, the video was meant as an opportunity for Leitch to detail her controversial proposal to screen everyone coming to Canada — immigrants, refugees, tourists — for so-called “Canadian values.”
While Leitch describes it as a “common sense” idea supported by a majority of Canadians, many critics — including other Conservative leadership contenders — have accused her of trying to win support based on fears and prejudices against immigrants.
People have already edited the clip, stitching together Leitch’s many pauses into one long series of shrugs and smirks. Another video posted to YouTube edited the video and added music and subtitles to make a joke that Leitch was drunk.
Some called it “bizarre,” others called it “racist.” Whatever you think of Leitch, the video is certainly bringing attention to her campaign.
