Lucy Collins, freshman at Boulder’s Fairview High
Lucy Collins was selected as a Scholastic’s American Vision Nominee for her collage, titled Old Bay Bridge. Collin’s “Best of Show” piece was chosen as one of the five most outstanding works of art from the state’s Gold Key recipients, which included more than 5,600 submissions. She is the only Boulder Valley student and only Colorado middle school student to be nominated and will represent the region on the national level as the American Vision nominee.
How did you get interested in art?
When I was signing up for classes for eighth grade, I just thought “Hey, art sounds cool.” When I took it, I found out that I really enjoyed it. I like art because of how much I get to use my hands and my creativity. I feel focused when I work on an art project that can distract me from any stress.
Is there a medium you most like to work with?
I like to most work with mixed media and sketching, but next year I plan on taking a painting course.
How did you come up with the idea for your Old Bay Bridge collage?
I lived in San Francisco when I was younger, and I love cities and the ocean. That’s when I remembered the cool bridges I saw and the Bay Bridge was what I ended up choosing.
What do you like about Fairview High?
I like Fairview because of how big it is and how many different people you can meet there with all kinds of interests.
What’s your favorite class or subject?
My favorite subject is math, but I really like all of my classes this year.
Do you participate in any club, activities or sports?
I play both volleyball and basketball.
Do you have a favorite book or movie?
I love books, it is hard to choose one. The last book I read was called “Brain on Fire,” and I really liked it.
Do you have any advice for next year’s freshmen on starting high school?
To anyone preparing to be a freshman, just don’t procrastinate your homework, stay positive and school will be so much less stressful.
