“Quite likely” victory for Marine Le Pen in 2027, ode to the “popular classes” and the rebellious François Ruffin: Gérald Darmanin continues his offensive, as a prelude to his political comeback on Sunday in Tourcoing (North), and causes a stir in the within the majority.
Friday, the Minister of the Interior went to Nîmes. Two days after the death of a 10-year-old boy, a collateral victim of the war between drug traffickers, an 18-year-old teenager was shot dead Thursday at a deal point. Two CRS units deployed, the Raid requested: it is necessary “to restore public order, which is the case”, explained Mr. Darmanin on RTL.
The security news does not prevent the tenant of Place Beauvau from continuing his political offensive. In mid-August, Mr. Darmanin had openly expressed his interest in the 2027 presidential election and distributed criticism of the majority, accused of not listening enough to the “working classes”. Thursday evening, the minister spent a new layer in the columns of La Voix du Nord.
“The fact is that in five years, a victory for Madame Le Pen is quite likely. Faced with this, we will only need one candidate. And that we do not rely only on the winners of globalization and the elected from the city centers, because that does not make 51% of the votes”, insists the minister.
Outings that irritate the majority. “2027 is a long way off,” Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne had already retorted on Wednesday. “Ideas must come before egos”, launches Friday in Le Parisien the secretary general of the presidential party Renaissance, Stéphane Séjourné.
Scathing response from the person concerned in the same newspaper towards this former collaborator of Emmanuel Macron, group president in the European Parliament: “I did not inherit any city, any constituency, I was not elected on a list proportionally. I am, it is true, different: of modest origin and from an immigrant background, that may be embarrassing”.
“Opening an internal front in the majority is the worst thing we could do”, regrets an important leader of the presidential camp, who is annoyed by “the constitution of a Sarkozyist current within the majority”.
Sunday, in Tourcoing, Gérald Darmanin intends to demonstrate the extent of his support. Before his final speech, three themes will be discussed: work, ecology and safety.
The Minister announces the presence of “a hundred parliamentarians”. From the majority, including Laurent Marcangeli, the boss of the Horizons deputies, the party of Édouard Philippe, but also some elected Les Républicains. Even from the Liot group, which has tabled motions of censure against the government, but which the minister intends to pamper by going to his parliamentary days in early September in Guadeloupe.
A dozen ministers should also make the trip. As for Elisabeth Borne, “I of course invited her”, assured Mr. Darmanin on Friday. But for now, the presence of the Prime Minister is not relevant.
Like Nicolas Sarkozy, who gives him strong support for the Élysée in his latest book, Gérald Darmanin therefore intends to seduce the working classes. And the elected representative of the North to quote the Insoumis François Ruffin, who regularly insists on social and security issues for the left electorate.
But the deputy of the Somme does not intend to be enlisted. A possible victory for Ms. Le Pen in 2027, “thanks to whom? Ten years of Macron-Darmanin-Philippe-Le Maire. When Macron promised in 2017 that there would be no reason to vote for the extremes in the end of his mandate. When the problem presents itself as the solution”, posted François Ruffin on X (ex-Twitter).
Also invoked by the Minister of the Interior, the communist leader Fabien Roussel, elected from the North like him, judges Mr. Darmanin “disqualified to speak to the working classes”. For the socialist Olivier Faure, he holds a speech “in total contradiction” with the action carried out for six years by Emmanuel Macron: “privileging the very upper classes”. And Jean-Luc Mélenchon designated the Minister of the Interior as the main adversary within the presidential camp, a “common candidate” ensuring “the junction of the right with the far right.”
