The Abia State Government has initiated the renovation project of the Eke Oha Shopping Centre in Aba South Local Government Area. The goal is to transform the market into a modern shopping complex. The project is part of Governor Alex Otti’s vision to revamp the economic landscape of the state with the help of private investors. This initiative aims to generate a steady return on investment, create job opportunities for the youth, and open up new avenues for aspiring entrepreneurs.
The renovation will be conducted in phases to enhance the appearance of the commercial city and ensure the safety of both traders and customers. Governor Otti emphasized the importance of making markets in Aba 24-hour business hubs with cutting-edge facilities to guarantee the well-being of all stakeholders. The project will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, focusing on stakeholder engagement and consultation to safeguard the interests of the state and the business community.
To address the concerns of traders who rely on the market for their livelihood, the government has arranged temporary accommodations during the renovation period. The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) and other relevant bodies will collaborate with market traders to manage the relocation process effectively. Governor Otti reassured the traders that the government would work closely with developers to ensure a smooth and timely completion of the project.
Chimezie Ukaegbu, the State’s commissioner for Transport, highlighted the significance of the project in rejuvenating businesses within Aba. Eke Oha Market has been a pivotal hub for the local fashion industry, offering employment opportunities and a platform for entrepreneurs to flourish. The renovation project aims not only to enhance the physical infrastructure but also to create a conducive environment for growth and innovation.
The remodelling of Eke Oha Market will incorporate modern amenities, digital technologies, and streamlined payment systems to attract a global customer base. The project is expected to stimulate economic activities, create jobs, and elevate Aba’s status as a commercial hub. Stakeholders are encouraged to support the initiative for its successful implementation.
Rhino Homes and Property Limited, the contractor for the project, expressed their commitment to delivering a world-class textile market that aligns with the state government’s vision. The firm is dedicated to minimizing disruptions to traders’ daily activities during the renovation process. The expansion of Eke Oha Market will provide additional shop spaces and accommodate street traders to ensure a smooth transition.
The new Eke Oha Market will feature advanced infrastructure such as fiber optic connections, electric lifts, a mini clinic, and emergency response services. A digital platform has been developed to facilitate transparent shop purchase, allocation, and management processes. Once completed, the market is poised to offer a unique and pleasant shopping experience, setting a new standard for trading businesses in Abia.
