The World Climate Summit in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, begins on November 6th. Greta Thunberg does not want to take part there, as she announced. She criticizes the climate conference as a forum for “greenwashing” and has other good reasons not to make the trip.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg will not be attending this year’s world climate summit, which begins in Egypt next weekend. The 19-year-old announced this according to a report in the British newspaper “The Guardian” at the presentation of a book on the consequences of global warming in London.

Thunberg criticized the climate conference known as COP27 as a forum for “greenwashing” – the term refers to politicians pretending to take measures against global warming. She also cited the limited opportunities for civil society participation in Egypt as a reason for her absence. “I’m not going to COP27 for many reasons, but space for civil society is extremely limited this year.” She had previously expressed solidarity with “political prisoners” in Egypt on Twitter.

According to dpa information, several activists from Africa and other regions of the Global South will be there, as well as some from Europe, especially Eastern Europe. In addition, Thunberg does not travel by air for the sake of the climate. Egypt is very difficult to reach from Sweden without a plane. COP27 begins on November 6th in the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. There, representatives from around 200 countries want to debate for two weeks how global warming can be curbed.
