Republican President Éric Ciotti called on the government on Tuesday for “a very important paradigm shift” on immigration, warning in the face of the outstretched hand that “we will not be satisfied with lukewarm water”.
“For six years, we have seen a lot of powerless words and few determined acts. I am waiting to see,” the deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes told AFP, while the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin told AFP. assured on Tuesday that he wanted to resume consideration of his immigration bill.
“In the coming days, we will be formulating very specific and very bold proposals” in this area, added Mr. Ciotti, listing: “are we ready to review the nationality code, to completely reform asylum so as not to grant it only at the border and not to those who have entered illegally, to put in place quotas by categories including for asylum seekers?”
“If the Minister of the Interior aligns himself with us, we will discuss it, but we will not be satisfied with lukewarm water”, added Mr. Ciotti, while LR holds, with 62 deputies, the contribution of votes missing from the presidential majority in the National Assembly.
Believing that “the French need a strong text” to “fight against irregular immigration”, Mr. Darmanin said on Tuesday “sure that with the Republicans we can agree on this issue”.
On this migratory theme “closely linked to integration”, Mr. Ciotti also pleaded for “strict respect for French secularism”, believing that “we will have to go into areas on which the government is never gone, like the ban on wearing the veil for school outings, minors, users of public services…”
Pleading for “a real revolution” with “a change of concept and policy”, the president of the Republicans affirmed that certain texts which he calls for “will require a constitutional reform” and “can only be approved by referendum” .
Returning also to the idea of ??a social conference that he launched on Friday, Mr. Ciotti considered that “the first problem of the French is purchasing power, and the first response is a significant increase in wages with an effort to the State on the reduction” of contributions.
“I will bring to the head of LR a project based on the reduction of compulsory levies and an increase in wages. This is one of the keys to national recovery,” he said.
