No monopoly on speech
Re: “College officials need swift lesson in academic freedom” [Opinion, Feb. 26]: Steven Greenhut’s piece on the OCC flap is right on the money. Freedom of expression cuts both ways. Not only does the instructor have the right to express her opinion (although the usage of her position of authority to espouse her leftist diatribe to a captive audience is at best questionable), but Caleb O’Neil has an equal right to express his opinion as well.
The fact that the video was released to the internet as a way to offset the monopoly Cox enjoyed should be irrelevant. You don’t advance the cause of free speech by trying to discourage (or conceal) someone else’s voice. It seems particularly absurd to me that any college official should have to be reminded of that.

They were trespassing
Re: “100-plus gather to protest officer’s firing of gun” [News, Feb. 27]: Why doesn’t the Register provide some space to condemn the teenagers for trespassing on the officer’s property? I wonder about these teenagers with regard to what they are being taught at home. If you go on someone else’s property without permission, that is known as trespassing and you can be arrested. These teenagers should have been apologetic rather than confrontational.
Seems like, with teenagers, they do not feel that the common sense rules set forth by society as a whole apply to them. Since when are they so special? Trespassing is a crime!

Teach respect
We have all seen parents who did not teach their children to respect their elders, to respect the police, to respect property rights. Then, wonder why their children did not respect them when they grew up.

Building a fence
Yes, I agree. Film the police. That way when your snotty nosed 13-year-old “children” trespass on someone else’s property, we can all see the truth. The irony is the quote by Genevieve Huizar, “And so what if a kid steps on the grass? If you don’t want him to step on your grass, build a fence. That would solve it, right?” That’s what President Trump is planning to do.
