Ukrainian President Zelenskyy speaks of an unprecedented attack on his country’s energy supply. The south and the area around Kyiv are also shelled at night. Meanwhile, more weapons from Germany reach Ukraine.
Ukraine can rely on more weapons from Germany in the war against Russia. As the Federal Government reports in its current overview of military services, four more self-propelled howitzers 2000 and two more MARS II multi-propellant rocket launchers have been handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces.
These had previously received ten howitzers and three MARS II missile systems. According to the information, two surface drones from Germany also reached Ukraine. Federal President Steinmeier promised the new deliveries to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj on Tuesday during his visit to Ukraine.
In the conversation, however, Zelenskyj thanked Germany for the delivery of the Iris-T air defense system and emphasized that Iris-T was “really a priority” for his country. It can be used to combat Russian rockets and cruise missiles, for example, and it is also intended to take enemy aircraft and helicopters out of the sky.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the Russian army again attacked targets in the vicinity of the capital Kyiv from the air during the night. A community had been shot at, Governor Oleksiy Kuleba said on Telegram, without naming the location. Rescue workers are on duty there. Some of the incoming missiles were intercepted.
Two hours before midnight, the Russian army launched more than 20 Iranian Shahed-136 combat drones over southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force said. 19 of them were shot down, most over the Odessa region.
According to the authorities, a power plant in Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia was also attacked by a drone. This was announced by the head of the city, Mikhail Raswoschaejew. A transformer was set on fire, but it was not connected to the grid at the time. No one was injured, and there were no effects on the port city’s power supply. The drone was intercepted as it approached the power plant, the city manager wrote on Telegram.
Sevastopol is important as the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. There have been several explosions in military installations and drone attacks on the peninsula, which has been claimed by Russia since 2014. Ukraine does not officially commit to this. But the incidents suggest that Kyiv has the ability to attack far behind the front lines.
Zelenskyy described the Russian airstrikes as an unprecedented attack on his country’s energy supply. He warned of impending widespread power cuts across the country and called on the population to save energy. “Russian terrorists have created such difficult conditions for our energy workers that no one in Europe has ever seen or experienced anything like it,” Zelenskyi said Wednesday in his daily video address, referring to the Russian airstrikes.
