As Prince of Wales, he fought for climate protection for decades. As king, Charles will miss his first major climate conference. Supposedly on the advice of British Prime Minister Liz Truss.

The British King Charles III. will not take part in the world climate conference in Egypt in November – according to information from the “Sunday Times”, Prime Minister Liz Truss was against it. The staunch environmentalist Charles actually wanted to give a speech at the conference, the newspaper reported. But Truss spoke out against the participation of the new British king at a personal meeting last month.

The monarch’s press service contradicted this interpretation: Rather, Charles had sought Truss’s advice on this issue. “It has been agreed in friendship and mutual respect that the King will not attend,” the BBC quoted a statement from the service as saying. Another palace source said the new monarch was “personally disappointed” at missing the conference, according to the newspaper. He has already planned various meetings at the summit.

The Conservative Truss took office on September 6 and was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, who died two days later at the age of 96. The Queen spoke at the UN climate conference in November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. Charles also gave a speech there and called on politicians to redouble their efforts in the fight against global warming.

There is currently speculation that Truss could withdraw her country’s international climate commitments. There are several ministers in her new cabinet who are skeptical about the goal of climate neutrality in 2050. The “Sunday Times” wrote that the prime minister’s participation in the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, was unlikely.
