What the UN General Assembly decides has no significance under international law. However, this vote is symbolically significant: 143 countries condemn the recent annexations by Russia in Ukraine, only five states explicitly agree with Moscow’s reading.

The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly condemned Russia’s illegal annexations of Ukraine. 143 of the 193 member states voted in the largest body of the United Nations in New York for a corresponding resolution – 5 countries voted against, 35 abstained. Although the decision is not binding under international law, it shows Moscow’s clear international isolation and can develop political and moral power.
