The Oscars are all about the movies, and some of the nominated films had great songs. The best original song nominees were able to perform for Academy Awards audiences Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Performances gave audiences a taste of what the movies were like, and you can watch all the nominees’ performances, as well as the In Memoriam segment, below.
Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” was the perfect high-energy number to kick off the 2017 Oscars. The former N*SYNC member started out in the lobby before making his way into the audience with his dancers. The “Trolls” star took the opportunity to make viewers swoon when he started dancing with wife Jessica Biel.
“Moana” songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda dazzled the Academy Awards audience with his rapping skills before tossing it over to Auli’l Cravalho. The 16-year-old kept her composure while singing “How Far I’ll Go,” even after being hit in the face with one of the blue flags.
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling didn’t perform their songs from “La La Land,” which were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. They left that to John Legend, who played a supporting role in the movie. He played a medley of both the movie’s nominated songs, “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream).” The choreography paid homage to Stone and Gosling’s dances throughout the film.
Sting performed “The Empty Chair” from “Jim: The James Foley Story.” Since the flick was a documentary, the theatrical elements were kept to a minimum. It ended with a simple quote and photo of journalist James Foley.
Sara Bareilles was the perfect choice for the In Memoriam segment. The songwriter, who will make her Broadway debut in “Waitress” this spring, covered Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” A highlight reel played to remind audiences of who was lost this year.
