A senior ex-adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly in intensive care at a European hospital. Anatoly Chubais last served as Putin’s special envoy for relations with international organizations. He had resigned shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and left Russia.

Well-known Russian presenter Ksenia Sobchak, a family friend, told the messaging app Telegram that she spoke to Chubai’s wife Avdotya. Chubais suffers from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). She did not specify which clinic Chubais is in. GBS is a rare condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves.

Sobchak described Chubai’s condition as “unstable”. Chubais gave no reasons for his resignation in March. However, a connection with the Russian attack on Ukraine was suspected.

Chubai’s resignation was the most senior of a series of official resignations. Chubais is very well known in Russia. He has held a number of high-ranking posts since the early 1990s, including as deputy head of government and head of the presidential administration under President Boris Yeltsin, where he was responsible for the privatization of the private sector.
