Aytop Özkuscu, who came 1970 from Turkey to Germany, remembers a scene to this day: Shortly after her arrival she found work in a school garden. When it was winter, German colleagues sat in building and sent Özkuscu out into snow to digging up beds. “You came to work,” y shouted after her, “Out! I want you to work! ” The n young woman did not know how to help and dug up frozen ground. For 13 years it went like this.
Today, a good 50 years later, racism in Germany is more subtle. Aytop Özkuscus granddaughter Cansu especially experiences nasty looks and remarks. As a little child, she didn’t feel foreign at all. It was only in elementary school that it was said: You Turk, you Turk, you foreigner, she says. And after first Islamist attacks in Europe, ir neighbors were standing up on subway and had set off. Cansu remained irritated.
Many people in Germany have similar experiences. They eir immigrated or were born and grew up here – and are still seen as immigrants, critically eyed, harassed, confused, and asked for a ticket on train.
We have invited six of m to a conversation between generations. Cansu Özkuscu speaks to her grandmor Aytop; The Chinese-German film director Dieu Hao do with retiree Dang Chau Lam from Vietnam; And African scientist Josephine Apraku talks to activist Tahir della.
