The plane taken by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and the Minister of National Education Gabriel Attal to go to Rennes to attend the start of the school year on Monday morning does not pass with the left and environmentalists who have mocked this means environmentally unfriendly transport.
While the department of Ille-et-Vilaine is located an hour and a half by train from Paris, the head of government and the Minister of Education went to Liffré and Saint-Germain-sur-Ille, near Rennes, in the government’s Falcon, according to information from BFMTV, a means of transport that emits much more greenhouse gases than the train.
“For their back to school in Liffré, Gabriel Attal and Elisabeth Borne preferred the 38-minute flight by presidential plane to the 1h30 TGV for Rennes”, was particularly indignant the deputy François Ruffin on X (ex-Twitter). “But fortunately, for the photos, they will eat vegetable bolognese this afternoon,” he added.
“Hypocrisy”, denounced the leader of the ecologist deputies in the Assembly, Cyrielle Chatelain. “When we have really become aware of the climate catastrophe, we do not take the plane when we can make the trip in 1h30 with the train,” she said.
“Yes, but they took the same plane? It’s still a small gesture,” mocked Green MEP David Cormand.
This trip comes as Emmanuel Macron is expected to present his full ecological planning strategy soon and while France is going to experience another week of high heat.
The government also encourages the use of the train by prohibiting certain commercial flights when there is a rail alternative of less than 2h30.
