A few days ago, Ukrainian drones attacked Russian warships off Sevastopol. Despite the attack, Germany’s top marine still believes the Kremlin’s fleet is powerful. Vice Admiral Kaack warns that the Kremlin’s fleet building program is continuing unabated.
According to Germany’s top marine, Russia’s fleet should not be underestimated, even after the attacks by the Ukrainian military with maritime drones in the port of Sevastopol. “These sea drones are an easy-to-use weapon with considerable penetrating power,” said naval inspector Jan Christian Kaack in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. “Apparently, the Russian side has not adjusted to these hybrid processes, and that is a bit astonishing.” However, this should not “lead one to underestimate the Russian fleet”.
“We see an uninterrupted construction program of modern units, which are also equipped with weapons that should not be underestimated, for example hypersonic weapons and ballistic missiles,” emphasized the Vice Admiral. The fleet continued to occupy an important place in Moscow’s military doctrine.
Ukrainian military attacked the Russian Black Sea Fleet at its base in Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula last weekend. Officially, Moscow speaks of minor damage from the attack by combat drones at sea and from the air. The exact extent is not known.
At the end of September, Kaack warned against upgrading the Kremlin fleet. “I’m assuming that the Russian Navy will emerge from the Ukraine war essentially stronger,” the vice admiral told the “Welt” a few weeks ago. The announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that new hypersonic sea missiles called “Zirkon” would soon be put into service on a frigate was not propaganda: “I take it seriously. Very seriously,” said Kaack.
