An air of autumn in the middle of summer. Temperatures are expected to drop from Wednesday, and could even drop to 16 degrees on Saturday August 5. In various regions of France, this would equate to temperatures below normal for the season by 5 degrees, after several weeks of hot weather. In the Alps, this could even mean snowfall at 2,600 meters above sea level, according to Le Figaro.
The weather will be equivalent to that of October, underlines La Chaîne Météo. The north of France will also be under heavy rain, up to 128 mm locally in the north-east of the country.
“The last time we observed a similar situation with such low temperatures at the beginning of August was in 2014,” said meteorologist Gilles Matrico.
But these heavy rains accompanied by autumnal temperatures will not be enough to overcome the drought over the length. The rain is “good news to ease the dryness on the surface”, but “we are still in a period of evaporation and the temperatures would need to be lower” for the water to infiltrate “deeply”.
Moreover, the south of the country will not be affected by the rains. The mistral and the tramontane, on the other hand, “will blow strongly” and “will accentuate the dryness of the soil and the risk of fire”. The Var is on red alert for the risk of fire this Sunday.
