The Ministry of Sports Development has taken action following the embarrassing controversies that surrounded Nigeria during the 2024 Olympic Games in France. The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, is determined to hold accountable those responsible for the negative spotlight on the country.
One of the major issues that arose during the Olympics was the omission of Favour Ofili from the 100m race. Additionally, Nigerian cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye had to borrow a bicycle from her German counterparts to compete, highlighting the challenges faced by Nigerian athletes.
To address these issues, the Ministry has announced the establishment of a seven-man investigative committee. This committee, which includes members such as Mumuni Alao, Aliyu Mohammed, Hajia Rakiya, Godwin Enakhena, Abubakar Ango, Christy Opara, and Victor Okangbe, will be inaugurated at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
The primary goal of the panel of inquiry is to identify those responsible for the various challenges faced by Nigerian athletes. This includes looking into administrative errors and poor technical decisions that may have contributed to the disappointing performance of Nigerian athletes in Paris, where the country participated in 12 events with 88 athletes but failed to win any medals.
Moving forward, the Ministry is committed to ensuring that such embarrassing incidents are not repeated in future international competitions. By holding those accountable for the shortcomings of the 2024 Olympics, the hope is to implement changes and improvements that will benefit Nigerian athletes in the long run.
