The German Athletics Association is going to the home European Championships in Munich from August 15th to 21st with 112 athletes, but without the two-time European champion Gesa Felicitas Krause.
After ex-world champion Johannes Vetter (LG Offenburg) and European champion Christin Hussong (LAZ Zweibrücken) as two German medal candidates in the javelin throw, the steeplechase runner also has to pass for health reasons.
“My current state of health has a deeper medical background that cannot be solved quickly,” said two-time World Cup third Krause on Instagram. “My sport year was associated with many obstacles and unfortunately there were far too few on the track. It breaks my heart to say it out loud now, but I cannot and will not start in Munich.”
The German squad is led by long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo from LG Kurpfalz. “The anticipation of the European Championships at home is huge, and with the nomination we can now take the last step towards Munich,” said head national coach Annett Stein according to a statement on Friday. After the disappointing World Championships in the USA, the German track and field athletes want to ensure more positive results at their European Championships from August 11th to 21st.
