Dutch driver Dilano van ‘t Hoff died this Saturday in an accident in the Formula Regional European Championship at the Spa circuit in Belgium.
The 18-year-old driver for MP Motorsport was competing in a morning race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, ahead of the Spa 24 Hours race, which was held later.
“MP Motorsport is deeply saddened to confirm that our driver, Dilano van’t Hoff, has passed away as a result of an accident during the second race of the Alpine European Regional Formula Championship at Spa-Francorchamps,” his team confirmed.
Motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, also expressed regret.
The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is where French driver Anthoine Hubert died after a multiple accident during a Formula Two race at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2019.
Two-time F1 champion Max Verstappen, also a Dutchman, expressed his condolences, saying wet driving conditions should have been looked at beforehand.
“Incredibly sad. I didn’t know him personally. Of course he was a Dutch racing driver, a promising driver, who had the same dreams as us,” said Verstappen, speaking at the Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday. “We have to look at these types of situations. It’s easy to blame the track, but I think also looking at how wet it was. … (There are) definitely things we have to look at for the future, what we can do better to protect the drivers.”
Two years ago, six drivers in the women’s W Series required medical check-ups after a heavy crash during qualifying at the same track.
