There is no longer a reigning world champion French boxer. The only one still standing until then, Arsen Goulamirian, lost his WBA light heavyweight belt on points against Mexican Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez on Saturday March 30 in California.
Goulamirian (36 years old), who had not fought since the end of 2022, was never able to set his pace against his 32-year-old opponent, unanimously named the winner of the three judges after the twelve rounds of combat. The three judges gave a score of 118-110 largely in favor of Ramirez.
Entering the ring with the French and Armenian flags, his country of origin, Goulamirian dreamed of soon unifying world belts, but will have to lower his ambitions for his next fight. The one who defended his belt acquired in 2018 four times, despite powerful blows, never seemed able to shake the Mexican, who hit the Frenchman clearly and regularly.
Another fight planned for Goulamirian
Arsen Goulamirian, who trains at Big Bear in the Californian mountains, fought for the first time in the United States, in the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, a suburb of Los Angeles.
After seeing his career hampered by promoter problems in recent years, Goulamirian had signed for this fight with Golden Boy, the promotional company of the former star of the noble art Oscar De La Hoya, present on Saturday to support Ramirez, the one of his protégés. The Frenchman must have yet another fight organized by Golden Boy.
