The Dragons Rhöndorf mourn Mubarak Salami. The 26-year-old basketball player was involved in a fatal accident on Friday evening. According to the police, Salami’s car collided with a van that was securing a heavy transport.

The German basketball professional Mubarak Salami from the Dragons Rhöndorf died in an accident on Autobahn 7. His club from the third-class ProB league confirmed a corresponding report by the “Hamburger Abendblatt”. “Things are happening that are incomprehensible and hard to put into words,” the Dragons wrote on their website.

The accident happened on Friday evening between Berkhof and Schwarmstedt (Heidekreis) in Lower Saxony. According to the police, Salami’s car collided with a transporter in the direction of Hamburg, which was securing a heavy transport driving on the hard shoulder.

The car then spun into the left lane and collided with another car. According to the information, both cars immediately caught fire and burned out completely. The 28-year-old driver of the second car was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Salami, who died at the age of 26, comes from Hamburg and was the best scorer in the ProB for the past two years as a player on Eimsbütteler TV. After his Hamburg club was relegated, he moved first to SBB Baskets Wolmirstedt in the summer and then to Rhöndorf in January.

The basketball scene takes a big part in Salami’s tragic death. On Sunday afternoon, FC Bayern, among others, expressed their condolences. “Together with Basketball-Germany we mourn Mubarak Salami,” the club wrote on Twitter: “Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace!”
