When Breno Giacomini started 33 games for the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2013, he was thought of as perhaps the offensive line’s weakest link and eminently replaceable.

That hasn’t turned out to be the case.

Since he signed with the New York Jets ahead of the 2014 season, the Seahawks have been trying to find some consistency at Giacomini’s vacated right tackle position. Justin Britt started 16 games there after his selection in the second round of the 2014 draft, but coaches decided he’d be a better fit inside and moved him to guard the following year before eventually finding him a long-term home at center this past season.

The right tackle spot was filled the past two years by former undrafted free agent Garry Gilliam, who has the requisite athleticism for the position, but not the physicality or nastiness the team would like to see there.

Giacomini, despite his limitations, has physicality and nastiness in spades, and his Friday release — which came after he played in just five games in 2016 due to recurring back injuries — has already led to some speculation that he could return to Seattle for a second go-round.

Perhaps that kind of theorizing is simply in the air after the Denver Broncos reportedly told former Seahawks left tackle Russell Okung they were not picking up his four-year contract option, thereby making him an unrestricted free agent on March 9.

SeattlePI.com sports writer Stephen Cohen talks about Seattle sports over a sandwich at Mean Sandwich in Ballard.

Neither Okung nor Giacomini would be a long-term solution at positions that are begging for one, but both could be kind of transitional pieces that provide some short-term security while the Seahawks attempt to find their bookends of the future.

The 31-year-old Giacomini recently underwent back surgery but told reporters he expected to be ready by the time training camp starts. He would likely come cheap on a short-term deal, making him potentially a better fallback option than Bradley Sowell, whom the team signed to a one-year deal ahead of last season.
